We Are Honey Whites
We play the music of Morphine
Bio
Boston's Morphine was one of the greatest, most unique rock bands ever. They made five albums and played hundreds of concerts around the world between 1990-99. Featuring only a two-string slide-bass, saxophone (mostly baritone, but others were used, as well, sometimes two at once), a grooving, tasty drummer and the low-voiced vocals and lyrical stylings of their visionary frontman, Makr Sandman.
Ever since Mark's death, I have talked and dreamed about someday forming a low-key, local tribute band to play Morphine music for anyone who might like to hear it. After picking up a two-string bass, I started sussing out some of Mark’s signature bass licks to my favorite Morphine songs, and quickly found that I could also sing in a very similar range to Mark. I recorded myself doing Cure For Pain and Buena in my basement and immediately knew I had to keep going. My first call was to my best drummer buddy, Clay Kohl, with whom I played for many years in Magnetosphere. We always get on great as pals, and we've had deep musical sympatico from day one. We worked to put together some of their hits, but our efforts were put on hold in 2020.
We picked back up a couple of years later and found Dan Borden, our saxophone player. And, so, off we go. For now, it is truly a dream come true for this old Morphine lover to be playing this incredible music with two of the best friends and musicians who could have possibly shown up so fully committed to this project. If it all ended tomorrow, I'd be supremely happy with what we've done thus far, but I really do hope we're just getting started.
